How does AIDS spread?

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which causes AIDS is transmitted mainly through unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing needles and syringes with drug users, and/or being born with the virus.

What is HIV?

HIV is a retrovirus that infects several kinds of cells in the body, the most important of which is a type of white blood cell called the CD4.  The CD4 cell is a major component of the human immune system that helps keep people free from many infections and some cancers.
