WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT AIDS

What is AIDS? The disease, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, better known as AIDS, has
no cure or vaccine. The virus destroys the body's natural ability to fight illness.
Cancer and infectionns such as pneunmonia to invade the body and cause death.
How does AIDS spread?
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which causes AIDS is
transmitted mainly through unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing needles and
syringes with drug users, and/or being born with the virus.
What is HIV?
HIV is a retrovirus that infects several kinds of cells in
the body, the most important of which is a type of white blood cell called the CD4.
The CD4 cell is a major component of the human immune system that helps keep people free
from many infections and some cancers. HIV can effectively disable the body's immune
system, and destroy its ability to fight diseases.
How can I prevent getting AIDS?
Do not have unprotected sex with an infected person.
Do not share needles and syringes - these may contain infected blood.

fellowship |

Mitchell Wicker Jr. has been elected a Fellow of the American
College of Physicians (ACP), the society of internist. The
distinction recognizes achievements in internal medicine, the
